Liverpool have made a stunning start to the 2016/17 Premier League campaign and sit proudly at the top of the division, as domestic football takes a back seat for the latest round of international matches.

The Reds have raced out of the traps and have already defeated two of their main rivals for the Premier League crown in Arsenal and Chelsea, much to the delight of their supporters here in the Transfer Tavern.

It has been some years since our Liverpool supporting resident DJ has been able to truly get excited about a Reds team, but even he is delighted by what he has seen so far and has spent many nights supping in celebration at the Tavern’s bar.

It remains to be seen whether or not Jurgen Klopp’s side will have the mental strength to go on and claim the elusive Premier League title, although the start they have made has been impressive to say the least.

With January on the horizon the Liverpool boss will no doubt already have a list of targets in mind and Tavern writer Lee Clarke looks at three players valued under £20 million that the Reds’ boss should try and sign.

Charlie Taylor

The Leeds United left-back has been a key part of Garry Monk’s side this season and looks set for a move to the Premier League at some point during his career.

Taylor is valued at just £2.4 million by transfermarkt.co.uk, although given the fact that he is only 23-years-old the Championship are likely to demand much more.

Liverpool would be wise to sign a left-sided defender given that they have used James Milner as a makeshift option throughout this season and although he has done okay, if the club harbours serious title ambitions, a more natural performer is required.

Neven Subotic

The Borussia Dortmund central defender is a player who knows exactly what Jurgen Klopp is all about having spent time playing for the charismatic manager at the German outfit.

The Serbian defender has spent some time out with an injury but at 27-years-old the time could be now for the player to branch out and sample life playing in the Premier League.

Our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern thinks that a central defender is a must for Liverpool if they are to win the title, and Subotic could be just the man to propel them forward.

Valued at just £6.8 million according to transfermarkt.co.uk, this monster of a centre-back could be the defensive addition that really takes Liverpool to the next level.

Max Meyer

The Schalke attacking midfielder would be an ideal player to add competition for the impressive front three of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane.

Klopp has rated the 21-year-old for some time and he could well press ahead with a move during January, with transfermarkt.co.uk valuing the player at £13.6 million.
