Diego Costa has been unstoppable this season – and that has led to the somewhat outlandish statement by a few of the Chelsea fans in the Tavern that he is the best player in the Premier League.

You heard that right. Not the best Spaniard, or the best striker – they think that he is the single best player in the Premier League.

In truth, few of the punters in the Football Transfer Tavern agree with their sentiments. Whilst they do agree that he is a quality player, most think that to describe him as the best in the league is a bit of a stretch.

Despite this, our landlord is willing to hear them out – and has asked the Chelsea faithful to outlay their reasoning.

With that said, here are THREE reasons why Diego Costa is the best player in the Premier League…

 Goals

The most obvious answer.

When it comes to goals – nobody can compete.

Sure, the likes of Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero have been up there, and even gone beyond Costa during his time in London – but nobody has been as consistent as the Spaniard.

He was excellent in his first season, and then impressed again towards the end of the last campaign. Whilst Harry Kane and Aguero have both had blips – Costa has remained relatively in-form.

It says a lot that Costa was considered to have had a poor season last year – yet still bagged just short of a 2 games per goal ratio.

This season he has proven his quality once again – and currently sits atop the Premier League goalscoring charts.

Goals aren’t the only thing that he provides, though.

 More than a Player

Diego Costa has received a lot of flack for his antics on the field – but they make up so much of what makes him great.

He is a talismanic figure on the pitch for Chelsea – and his desire to play and win often helps to push Chelsea over the line.

You can criticise Costa for a lot of things – but commitment is not one of them – and no player is as committed to the cause as Diego Costa is.

He always wants to win, and he often pushes his teammates over the line too.

He is undoubtedly the most important player in the Chelsea first team.

 Adaptability

Often times, strikers are fairly one dimensional.

Players like Sergio Aguero love to play on the shoulder of the last defender, whilst players like Harry Kane often like to get more involved in the play. In Diego Costa, you have a striker that is a jack of all trades.

He is quick, but he is powerful. He is strong in the air, but he is also comfortable with the ball at his feet.

He can do it all – and he is undoubtedly the Premier League’s best.
