With the Daily Mail reporting that Atletico Madrid have opened talks about bringing Diego Costa back to the club from Chelsea, the Blues fans in the Transfer Tavern have been divided over whether it’s good or bad news.
Some think the Spanish forward should be allowed to go after last season’s title defence but others want to see him perform under Antonio Conte because on his day he’s arguably one of the best strikers in the Premier League.
The men from Stamford Bridge enter another new managerial era ahead of 2016/17 hoping that the incoming Conte can return the club to the upper echelons of the division.
The Italian will have in mind how he wants his new side to look. He’ll have studied meticulously Chelsea’s strengths and weaknesses from last season and will also have a decent idea of who is surplus to requirements.
Arguably Costa, could fit in such a category and in light of this possible eventuality, our landlord has tried to soften any blow this may cause.
Here then, are THREE reasons Diego Costa leaving Chelsea is no disaster at all…
Didn’t look interested at times last year
For large portions of the season Diego Costa simply looked like he’d rather be anywhere but on the pitch in a blue shirt.
The player from the season previous seemed to have grabbed his coat and left to be replaced by a man who looked like he didn’t care.
Admittedly, the same can be said for many of the Chelsea squad last season and Costa’s form did seem to pick up towards the end of the year but if the going gets tough again this season can Chelsea really afford their main striker to down tools again?
He’s too controversial
He’s been embroiled in so many controversies it’s easy to lose count.
When he first signed it was just the odd thing as he looked to impose himself on Premier League defenders but as his Blues’ career has gone on the petulance has gone through the roof.
The Spanish international has been involved in so many fracas that even large sections of the Blues’ support are losing patience and the fact he carried on in this manner last season despite all of Chelsea’s negative press already shows his sometimes lack of regard for the bigger picture.
Allows Chelsea to build for the future
Michy Batshuayi looks set to join Chelsea in a deal that’s strikingly similar to that of Blues icon Didier Drogba.
Both big powerful forwards, from Marseille and with a significant price tag. Surely Batshuayi will play a decent amount next season and this has to create a question mark over the future of Costa.
Conte seems to favour two forwards up front but at least one of those is the diminutive one that harries defenders – neither Batshuayi nor Costa offer that option and if the Blues want to build for the years ahead surely it’s Costa that will have to make way.
