Under Pochettino, things couldn’t have gone much better for Spurs.
The Argentine boss has undertaken a revolution at White Hart Lane, and he has turned the club from a European challenger to a genuine title contender in the Premier League.
Despite having what has been touted in the Tavern as the best defence in the league however, the Argentine boss is seemingly unhappy with what he has at his disposal; and has reportedly been looking at German defender Niklas Sule as he looks to improve his impressive squad.
Whilst the touted move as raised some eyebrows in the Tavern, our landlord thinks the deal could be a masterstroke.
With that said, here are THREE reasons why Niklas Sule would be a shrewd signing for Tottenham…..
Defensive Depth
The immediate reaction from a few of the punters in the Football Transfer Tavern questioned the need for Tottenham to invest in more defenders – especially given their fantastic defensive record thus far.
It must be said that Spurs’, defensively, are probably the best in the Premier League – but that does not mean there is not any need for improvement.
Sule’s capture would offer several things, not least in the form of additional defensive depth. Vergtonghen and Alderweireld are excellent central defenders, that much is certain, but it could be argued that Spurs have become somewhat over-reliant on the dynamic duo.
Should one of the pair go down with a long-term injury, Pochettino could find himself short on defensive depth – and that could prove pivotal this year; especially given the competitiveness of the league this season.
Looking to the Future
This might seem an obvious one, but at just 21 – Sule is almost certainly an investment for the future.
Certainly, he could do a job this year – but the real benefits of his signing would be seen long-term.
Vertonghen is 29 years old, whilst Alderweireld is 27 – meaning both players are beginning to enter the second phase of their careers. Certainly, in Vertonghen’s case, he won’t be able to compete at the highest level for more than a few years.
This is where Sule could step in, and training alongside the duo until that time comes will only prove beneficial for the 21-year-old.
Style of Play
Niklas Sule is, without doubt, a player man made for the Premier League.
His imposing frame means that he is strong in the tackle and dominant in the air, whilst technically he retains many of the traits of someone half his size.
He might lack pace somewhat, but his excellent ability to read the game and recognise where a pass is going will more than makeup for that – and he could prove to be the perfect partner to Alderweireld in a couple of years time.
He is also excellent with the ball at his feet, and has been touted as a ball-playing defender by a few Tottenham fans by the bar.
