Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are tearing their hair out at the moment as they can’t believe how this season appears to be going.

Coming into as recently as January the Reds were firmly in the title race for the Premier League as well as in contention for an EFL Cup final and a run in the FA Cup.

Wind forward to early February, though, and we find the Anfield club well out of form, out of both cup competitions and perhaps the biggest hit of all, out of the title race.

Indeed, many have had their say about why the club have crumbled so poorly and Jamie Redknapp in The Daily Mail reckons it’s because the club do not have a Xabi Alonso type player at the moment.

He feels that has to be their target in the summer, then, and our landlord thinks one of these three could be the answer for the club…

Julian Weigl

When Borussia Dortmund let Ilkay Gundogan go to Manchester City many felt it was a mistake on their part.

However, they appear to have been proved justified with young Julian Weigl more than showing he can take over from the German international. He pulls the strings for one of the best teams in Europe and our landlord reckons he’d be brilliant under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Mahmoud Dahoud

If the Reds want someone who can take players on as well as spray a pass around they’d do well to find a better option than Mahmoud Dahoud.

The German doesn’t score many goals but he certainly knows how to make the pass before the pass for a strike and that is what the Reds need as per Redknapp. The youngster has Champions League experience, too, and would surely be a hit at Anfield.

Dani Parejo

Liverpool might be better off going for a more experienced star for this role, though, and if that’s the case our landlord reckons they shouldn’t look further than Parejo.

The midfielder knows exactly how to control the tempo of a game with his range of passing right at the centre of midfield. He’s not a bombastic player but far more measured and in many ways that is what the Reds need – some calm in the storm.
