The Italian boss came into the club with high expectations, but he has exceeded them and then some.
After a 10th place finish last season, the Blue are flying high in the Premier League – with a Premier League title the goal for Conte and his players this season.
One outstanding criticism that our landlord has had with Chelsea this season is their lack of squad depth, and for Conte – it looks like it is becoming an issue.
He has used practically the same side for the best part of 3 months – and with players like Matic and Hazard suffering injuries in recent weeks – it appears to be taking its toll on the players.
Going forward, Conte must adopt rotational policy at Stamford Bridge, and in order to do that – he simply must invest in a few new players in January.
With that said, here are 3 transfers Chelsea should look to tie up in the first week of January
Virgil van Dijk
Defensive depth has been a real issue for Conte this season, with Terry and Zouma out with long-term injuries and Ivanovic and Gary Cahill both struggling defensively.
Conversely, Virgin van Dijk has been having an outstanding season for Southampton – and has quickly emerged as one of the Premier League’s best defenders.
Powerful, quick and mentally aware – he has been excellent, and he would be a perfect fit alongside Luiz and Cahill.
Marco Verratti
Marco Verratti is an audacious target, but if the Daily Mail is to be believed, Chelsea are keen on getting a deal done.
The Italian midfielder did, of course, play under Conte during his tenure as Italy boss, and so the Chelsea boss will be well aware of just how good Verratti is.
With Oscar reportedly leaving for China, Verratti would be a direct upgrade on the Italian – and the Blues would likely have a bit of money left to reinvest elsewhere.
He will be a hard player to sign, but he would be worth the effort.
Niklas Sule
Chelsea are also reportedly keen on German defender Niklas Sule – and like the deal for van Dijk, this one makes a lot of sense in the context of the Chelsea defence.
A lack of depth means additions are necessary, and Sule would be an upgrade on every single defender in blue.
He is just 21-years-old, and would provide Conte with a long-term successor to John Terry, who looks likely to depart at the end of the season. 6 months playing alongside Terry would be invaluable for the youngster.
