Everton have an exciting season on the horizon, with the vast investment promised for the first team and the appointment of former Southampton boss, Ronald Koeman.

The Dutchman will spend the next few weeks looking to convince those key players who may have had their heads turned elsewhere to stay, and then turning his own attention to the transfer market to see how he can improve his squad.

The Toffees finished a disappointing 11th in the Premier League last season, Koeman and his backroom staff will need to take a serious look at their options at Goodison Park and will want to build a squad that can take on the top clubs who are looking to spend big this summer.

However, if Forad Moshiri is willing to give Koeman the war chest promised, then the Everton fans could be treated to something rather special.

With all that in mind, when Everton welcome Pochettino’s Spurs to Goodison on the opening weekend of the season, this could well be the XI selected by Ronald Koeman…

GK: Kasper Schmeichel

Everton are in desperate need of a goalkeeper and where better to go shopping for one than the Premier League Champions, Leicester.

It may seem a strange prospect at the outset, quite the step down from a club who have cemented themselves in Premier League history to Everton.

However, Koeman’s move looked to be step down and look what happened there, money definitely talks these days and Everton seem to have bags of the stuff ready to throw at potential targets.

RB: Seamus Coleman

The Republic of Ireland captain is currently enjoying a marvellous summer with his national side in France, after their last ditch win over Italy on Wednesday, and he will want to continue his form into the new season under a new manager at Everton.

Often hailed as one of the most shrewd signings in Premier League history, the 27-year-old still has a lot to offer Koeman, with his pace being the main threat to opponents when on the front foot.

CB: John Stones

The youngster tipped to be one of England’s leading defenders in years to come is currently the subject of great interest by top clubs around Europe.

However, should Koeman convince Stones to stay, even for just another season, the effect that having one of the best defenders to have ever graced the game as a manager could have on the 22-year-old’s career could be invaluable.

Furthermore, if he stays, Stones would be one of the players which Koeman would look to build his team around and form the base of the spine of his squad.

CB: Lewis Dunk

The back four is an area of Everton’s squad that could do with somewhat of a re-vamp, and Koeman may well look to the Championship and Brighton’s Lewis Dunk to bring some new blood to the back line.

Dunk was a mainstay in the Brighton defence last season as they enjoyed a good campaign in the Championship, and the South Coast club are desperate to hold onto their man and will slap a hefty price tag on the 24-year-old.

LB: Leighton Baines

The England international missed large parts of last season, but will be desperate to get back to his old form under new boss, Ronald Koeman, and make sure he once again cements himself in the left back role.

The 31-year-old has made 280 appearances for the Toffees chipping in with 25 goals along the way, and has been a leading player at Goodison Park for many years.

Central midfield: James McCarthy

The Irish international was widely criticised for his performances during the group stage games for Ireland at Euro 2016 but showed his real talent with a defiant performance against the hosts in the Round of 16.

The 25-year-old has the potential to be a real linchpin in Ronald Koeman’s side next season, with the energy and commitment that he brings to his midfield role.

Central midfield: Ross Barkley

After a disappointing season last time out and without a minute played for England in their woeful Euro 2016 campaign, Ross Barkley has a point to prove to Koeman next season to ensure that he can realise his potential.

Although the 22-year-old has grown up playing in a more attacking role but could be equally as effective in a slightly deeper role, offering an outlet for the back four who can drive the team on through the middle.

Right Wing: Gerard Deulofeu

The Spanish winger made 33 appearances for the Toffees last season, scoring four and chipping in with eight assists in all competitions, and proved that he could be a real asset in seasons to come.

Still only 22 years of age, the former Barcelona man could progress into becoming the key element of Everton’s attacking prowess, if given the right guidance by Koeman.

Left Wing: Nani

The former united winger has been linked with a move back to the Premier League after moving to Fenerbache from Manchester in 2015.

The Portuguese international is currently away at the Euros with his national side and has impressed, scoring twice in four games so far. Koeman will be watching Portugal’s Quarter Final tie with Poland with a keen eye on the 29-year-old.

Attacking Midfielder: Juan Mata

With Mourinho having taken the reigns at Old Trafford, it may well be time for Jaun Mata to move on after he was pushed out of Chelsea by the Special One after the Spaniard had won the Player of the Season award two years on the trot at Stamford Bridge.

The signing of the Spanish international would be a real statement of intent by Everton, adding a real level of quality to a midfield which was less than entertaining last season.

Striker: Romelu Lukaku

Should Koeman manage to convince the Belgian international to stay at Goodison Park, even if it is just for one more season, then with the right additions such as Nani and Mata, then he will be the point of a potent attacking force to carry Everton forward.

Should the 23-year-old decide to move on, the substantial fee that he will command should mean that Koeman will be able to re-invest and bring in another proven goal-scorer.
