The quarter finals of the EFL Cup are upon us and once again our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to dream of a return to Wembley.

The Gunners have visited the national stadium a fair amount of times in recent years thanks to their FA Cup exploits but, rather astonishingly, they have never won the League Cup under Arsene Wenger.

Indeed, it’s something our resident Gunners fans here in the Transfer Tavern can hardly believe and with the Frenchman’s future yet to be decided past this season, they’re hoping they can win this trophy at last with him at the helm.

There’s still a way to go before they can think about that though.

The Gunners need to overcome a decent performing Southampton side in the last eight as they look to lift some silverware themselves this season.

It could be a close run thing, then, but our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern reckons if Arsenal go with this line-up they should be looking at a final four spot…

GK: David Ospina

Ospina is very much the back up ‘keeper but should get the nod over Petr Cech for this one. He’s been decent enough this season so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue for him to start.

RB: Carl Jenkinson

The right back saw Mathieu Debuchy get in ahead of him at the weekend but he went off through injury and with Hector Bellerin out, now is the chance for Jenkinson to stake his claim. He needs to perform here.

CB: Laurent Koscielny

Arsenal can’t afford to play too weak a team becuase Southampton will fancy this. Koscielny will have to play then as he is simply the Gunners’ best defender and by some stretch.

CB: Gabriel Paulista

The Brazilian returned to the side in the win against Bournemouth and may get given the chance to earn more minutes against the Saints. He needs to start impressing soon though because he has many critics surrounding him.

LB: Nacho Monreal

Monreal has proven in the last couple of weeks that left back is where Arsenal struggle. He could have given away penalties against both Manchester United and Bournemouth so he needs to raise it for this one.

CDM: Aaron Ramsey

Ramsey wants to play in the centre and he may get the chance here with Santi Cazorla still out. Arsenal cannot go with two holding players in a cup game at home and so the Welshman should expect to get to play in a deeper role.

CDM: Granit Xhaka

There needs to be some steel alongside Ramsey and despite Xhaka’s inconsistent performances, he’s better than Mohamed Elneny. He’ll need to start proving himself soon though as he was meant to be the Gunners’ missing piece in the centre.

RAM: Theo Walcott

Walcott nodded home at the weekend to secure the win against the Cherries and will likely start again in a bid to help keep his eye in. He’s looked better this season and would like nothing more than a semi-final if they can beat the Saints.

CAM: Mesut Ozil

The critics are beginning to swirl around Mesut Ozil once more. After a good start to the season he has gone slightly quiet and so a big performance is needed against the Saints to stop the mounting doubts against him.

LAM: Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez has performed admirably up top but it really is time to revert him back to a more natural position. He can cause havoc in behind Arsenal’s main striker as his link up on Sunday for their third goal with the following man highlighted…

ST: Olivier Giroud

Giroud has done well since his return from injury and when he’s in form he needs to play. You never know how long his purple patch will last and so Wenger needs to make use of it whilst he still can.
