Arsenal are on course to secure their first Premier League title in over two decades, with just 13 fixtures remaining.
The Gunners are currently six points clear at the top of the table, leaving Manchester City struggling to close the gap.
The January transfer window proved to be a quiet one for Mikel Arteta, with no new additions brought in to bolster his squad.
However, should Arsenal secure the Premier League title in the coming months, significant summer investment is likely to follow as they look to sustain their success.
Arsenal have shown few weaknesses since reinvesting in key areas of the squad last summer, but if they are to compete consistently at the highest level, further reinforcement will be required to fend off the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
It was widely reported that despite signing Viktor Gyokeres in the summer, the Gunners shortlisted several striker options and remain keen to add another forward to their already impressive attacking line.
Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates ever since he left Manchester City in 2024.
However, a fresh update has revealed that Arsenal have suffered a setback in their pursuit of the World Cup winner.
According to TEAMtalk, Alvarez’s representatives are advancing in positive talks with Barcelona, despite Arsenal and Chelsea also maintaining encouraging communication with Atletico over a potential blockbuster summer move.
The report claims the Argentine has made a move to the La Liga giants his preferred option after growing frustrated with the volatile situation in Madrid.
It is understood that a £100m fee has been discussed with the London clubs, while a move to Barcelona remains uncertain due to the club’s ongoing financial and structural issues.
As a result, while a Premier League return may not be Alvarez’s first choice, it has not been ruled out entirely.
Should Arsenal sign Julian Alvarez?

There is no doubt that Alvarez will be one of the most sought-after forwards when the summer transfer window opens, and Arsenal would need to be prepared for fierce competition for his signature.
The Gunners must also carefully assess their current options, having already committed £63.5m to Gyokeres last summer, particularly with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus both expected to be fully available again to compete for the central role.
That said, Alvarez’s versatility could make him an attractive option.
The 26-year-old – once hailed an “amazing talent” by Pep Guardiola – is capable of operating in wider attacking positions, as demonstrated during his time playing alongside Erling Haaland at Manchester City.
However, Alvarez ultimately grew frustrated at living in Haaland’s shadow, a factor that contributed to his decision to leave the Etihad after just two seasons.
As a result, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal would be willing or able to guarantee Alvarez the regular central striker role he desires if a deal were to materialise this summer.
With Havertz, Jesus and Gyokeres all currently tied down to contracts, it would make little sense for Arsenal to pursue another high-profile striker unless they are prepared to offload one of their existing attacking assets.
