The Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have not been happy with the Reds’ recent business…
Certainly, our resident Reds punters can’t believe some of the signings their club has made in recent times.
It’s seemed as though that whenever the club have looked like challenging for the title and are looking to bring in a few more bodies – they buckle under the pressure of getting it right.
After 2013/14 we saw them let Luis Suarez go and replace him with a handful of players that only some have done okay since. After 2008/09 we saw them let Xabi Alonso go, try and fail to replace him with Gareth Barry and then wind up getting an injury prone Alberto Aquilani.
Jurgen Klopp, at least, looks like he’s got it right at last but it’s been a long time coming and our landlord can’t believe some of the players that have worn the red shirt.
Here are the four worst that simply couldn’t cut it…
Iago Aspas
Aspas was signed by Brendan Rodgers as the extra striker to help out Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez but he never did.
The highlight of his career was a good performance against Oldham in the cup and so that tells you all you need to know about his time on Merseyside.
He quickly found himself back in Spain where he has done at least okay in terms of rebuilding his career.
Bruno Cheyrou
Famously hailed as the next Zinedine Zidane by manager Gerard Houllier, Liverpool thought they’d got a real player.
Unfortunately for them, bar the buzz haircut, Cheyrou couldn’t have been anything less like the Real Madrid star as he flopped in the Liverpool midfield.
He soon found himself struggling for first team football and that was the beginning of the end for his career.
Luis Alberto
Luis Alberto showed signs of promise at times but not enough for the Reds liking and he soon had to settle for a place on the bench.
The Spaniard was neat enough in his passing but simply couldn’t adapt to the pace of a Premier League football match and was quickly found out by his employers.
He now finds himself with Lazio in Serie A where his game is a little more suited.
Antonio Nunez
Arguably the worst deal in the tenure of Rafa Benitez and there’s certainly some competition.
Not only did Liverpool bring Nunez in to see him carry the threat of a knife made of sponge, but they also let Michael Owen go the other way to Real Madrid in a baffling deal.
Nunez had it up against him from the start and he quickly crumbled under the pressure.
