With Antonio Conte coming to Chelsea this summer; there have been rampant rumours here in the Tavern surrounding who Chelsea might bring in under the Italian.

Huge names like Paul Pogba and Leonardo Bonucci have been linked with the club, leaving a number of Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern excited.

Very little attention has been placed however on the outgoings at Stamford Bridge. People seem to be forgetting that the team performed terribly last season; and a summer clear out is expected at the club.

In order to fund and make room for new stars, Chelsea must sell players, especially since they are lacking the funds provided by Champion’s League Football.

In fact, our landlord there might be a few shockers facing the exit door this summer at the Bridge.

Here are FIVE players that Conte must sell to move Chelsea forward as a club…..

Oscar

When Oscar made his full Chelsea debut against Juventus in the Champion’s League and scored two worldies; the world was watching.

Huge things were expected from the Brazilian. However, since then; the attacking midfielder has been hugely inconsistent.

He will pull out a 10/10 performance one week, and then a 3/10 the week after. When he’s good, he is REALLY good; When he’s bad, he is REALLY bad.

With Chelsea looking to rebuild, inconsistency is something they will be looking to avoid.

With the number 10 position being the most crucial in the team in the modern game, Chelsea need to invest in improving it; and Oscar will have to be sacrificed as a result.

 

John Obi Mikel

Despite having an excellent season last year, John Obi Mikel is, reluctantly, on this list.

He has been an excellent servant for the Blues, offering stability and defensive prowess for nearly a decade, with no complaints despite long periods of no game time.

With Chelsea likely to invest heavily in a new midfielder this summer, it seems inevitable that Mikel’s place in the side will need to make way to accommodate.

With rumours abound surrounding interest from Turkey, and no guaranteed spot in the first team next year, Mikel is expected to move from SW6 this summer.

 

Baba Rahman

From a player that has enjoyed the best part of a decade with the Blues, to a player that has been there for a solitary year.

Since Ashley Cole left the club, Chelsea have largely failed to utilize a natural left back, with Azpilicueta filling in out-of-position ever since.

Baba Rahman, a £20 million signing, was expected to fill that gap; but has done little to prove his quality.

After failing to adapt despite a run of games towards the end of the year, Chelsea must look to cut their losses and sell the defender.

With a number of huge defenders linked with the club, it seems inevitable that he will make the move out of SW6.

 

Loic Remy

Another player that has failed to cement himself at Chelsea, Loic Remy is another player that will likely leave the club this summer.

During the opening year of his tenure, he seemed to be doing a job. Often coming off of the bench and scoring, he cemented his position as a super sub.

Towards the end of Mourinho’s tenure however, he seemed to not rate the Frenchman. Often opting for Bertrand Traore or Falcao instead; Remy quickly found himself at the bottom of the ladder.

Several injuries and managers later and very little has changed.

Chelsea are expected to invest big up front this summer, and Remy doesn’t offer the quality to challenge.

He should be sold to allow him to continue playing at the highest level, whilst also freeing up funds for the London club.

The Loan Army

This isn’t an individual player; but more of a collection of players that need to be moved on this summer.

Over the last few years, the club have signed a number of very average players as they look to develop them into world beaters; but this hasn’t always worked out.

For every Thibaut Courtois, there is a Jeffrey Bruma.

Instead of being sold at cut prices; the club often give these players a chance on loan to prove their quality; or to raise their transfer fee.

In this vein, we’re talking about players like Victor Moses, Juan Cuadrado and Mo Salah.

It seems unlikely that these players will ever play again for the Blues, and it seems pointless farming them out on loan and letting their contracts run down.

Instead, they should be sold and the funds from their sales can be invested in top quality talent.
