5 Manchester United players that deserve a Christmas bonus

Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t quite sure what to make of their season so far, as it’s been a mixed bag.

The Red Devils are well within the Premier League title race but have been rather uninspiring this season, with dull performances and struggles in front of goal.

Blame lies with Louis Van Gaal though, a point that has been made by many a pundit and fans in the bar, so the player’s, for the most part, have performed admirably. There is exceptions to that rule though, Wayne Rooney anyone?

Here though, as we begin our festivities for the weeks ahead, we’ve identified five players from Manchester United that deserve a Christmas bonus. Do you agree with our choices? Let us know in the comments below!

Chris Smalling

Smalling

Arguably the best Manchester United player this season, Chris Smalling has proved himself to be one of the best defenders in the Premier League. His manager might not be able to get his name right but he’s on the lips of United fans this season.

Looking solid, Smalling could potential be the catalyst to lead United to the Premier League title and you’d back him to be a starter for England in next summer’s European Championships.

Anthony Martial

The young striker hasn’t quite set the Premier League alight but it’s fair to say he’s performed admirably, with it all beginning with his spectacular performance on his Premier League debut against Liverpool. From there though, it’s been difficult.

The Frenchman is not at fault in truth though, as you’d expect the United attack to support him much better- particularly Wayne Rooney, who’s been a shadow of the player we’ve become accustomed too.

David De Gea

De Gea

Many were concerned on how David De Gea would perform for Manchester United after his eleventh hour move to Real Madrid fell through, particularly as he remained absent for the first few games after the closure of the window as his head wasn’t quite there.

However, since coming back into the side De Gea has shown once again just why he’s rated so highly. His saves have won United valuable points this season, keeping them in the title race.

Juan Mata

mata

Of all United’s attacking players, Juan Mata can hold his head highest this season. The Spaniard has settled into the team brilliantly and can be considered to be a valuable asset for Louis Van Gaal’s side.

Moving forward, United fans will want him to find more consistency and for him to become more influential in the final third. He certainly has the ability to become a playmaker for the team in the same fashion as Mesut Ozil and Kevin De Bruyne are for their sides, let’s just hope he matches that.

Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard

The youngster has performed so well that at one stage this season he ousted £25m-man Memphis Depay from his first-team spot and probably would have remained in that spot if it wasn’t due to injury. To top it off, he also earned his first England call-up.

Now, the challenge is ahead for him to continue his impressive displays and perhaps sneak onto Roy Hodgson’s plane. Realistically though, the target for Lingard is to continue his fine performances and maintain his regular features for the squad.
