The Man United fans are here in the Transfer Tavern and many of them are preparing for another bid for their star keeper. Indeed, going off the events of the last few years, our resident Red Devils don’t expect anything easy anymore..

Another transfer window approaching and another De Gea linked to Real Madrid story has emerged, the Spanish club have been long-term admirers of the former Atletico Madrid keeper for some years and came within a fax machine of signing him in 2015.

The 26-year-old shot-stopper is revered as one of the world’s best and United will fight tooth and nail to keep him for as long as they possibly can. One of the most popular figures in the United squad amongst our punters, he’s certainly proving his worth as one of the elite.

But, as you can imagine, at some point he’ll want to head home to his native land and Real Madrid seems the only destination. With that in mind, our landlord posed the question to some of the regulars that if De Gea was to leave in the summer, who would they want in to replace him.

Having said that, here are FIVE potentials to fill David De Gea’s boots…

Sergio Romero

United would have to look no further than there bench to get a replacement worthy of slotting in, in De Gea’s absence, proving his worth during the Europa League campaign last term.

Indeed, the Argentine goalkeeper has proved over time to be a class substitute especially in the cup runs and has played in a World Cup final, after all.

He knows the club inside out and knows the players, so this would be a no-brainer. Plus, he’s a full international kicking it around on the bench on a weekly basis, meaning he’d relish the chance.

Hugo Lloris

The French ‘keeper is one of the best in the league and United have been linked with him many a time in the past. While he’s a different style of ‘keeper, to De Gea but an outstanding one at that.

He certainly impressed at the Santiago Bernabeu, proving his worth as one of the best in Europe.

You’d think he’d want to make the step up to the United level to bag some trophies in his cabinet and being at Old Trafford would give him the perfect mantle for that.

Jack Butland

One of a couple of English goalkeepers pushing for the No.1 spot on the international level, Butland has shown signs of great potential at Stoke City.

If United were to cherry pick him to make the move, they could have a fantastic, young, English keeper in their ranks that could be around for years to come.

A huge talent.

Fraser Forster

Starting life out at Newcastle before a move to Celtic really put him the shop window, his move back to England with Southampton has elevated his stock to international level.

Always assured and always does whatever it takes to stop the opposition finding the back of the net, Forster could make a real name for himself and pinch that number one spot in the post-Joe Hart years.

Kasper Schmeichel

This would be an emotional one more than a long-term replacement, to follow in his father’s footsteps and get between the Old Trafford sticks would be a great achievement.

He’s already won the Premier League and going into his thirties he has the vast experience to manage being a United player, many a fan would like to see this happen.
