Aston Villa supporters have been in good voice in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend following their side’s comfortable win at Barnsley.

The Villans have made a stuttering start to the new Championship season and the pressure was somewhat increasing on manager Steve Bruce, who had overseen just one win from their opening seven matches prior to Saturday’s trip to Oakwell.

However, a brace from Albert Adomah and a Keinan Davis strike eased the pressure on the former Birmingham City and Hull City chief, and thus propelled the Midlands giants up to 13th in the Championship table.

Nonetheless, there has still been much talk surrounding the future of manager Bruce, who took over at Villa Park back in October but hasn’t necessarily improved them much since then.

And the current bookies’ favourite to replace the 56-year-old is former Everton and Manchester United boss David Moyes, who has been out of work since May after resigning from his post at Sunderland.

The 54-year-old was unable to keep the Black Cats in the Premier League last term and subsequently felt that he wasn’t the man to lead them in the second tier, but now he leads the race to replace Bruce at Villa Park.

Worked wonders at Everton

Although things haven’t worked for Moyes at either Manchester United, Real Sociedad, or Sunderland, the Scotsman worked wonders at Everton, whose situation somewhat resembles that of Villa’s.

The 54-year-old often got the Toffees in and around the European spots despite spending little money or having the quality and talent of the so-called bigger sides.

And given that Villa spent a small amount of money over the summer, and were often needing to sell before they bought, the situation certainly appears similar.

Yes, the Championship is a different challenge to the Premier League, but being able to get the best out of the squad was one of Moyes’ biggest achievements at Everton, and that experience would stand him in good stead at Villa, regardless of what’s happened since then.

Organisation a key trait needed in Championship

Moyes’ teams over the years have been built on defensive organisation and resilience – a key trait needed to achieve promotion from the Championship.

Of the past eight seasons of second tier football, the team with the best defensive record has won promotion on six occasions, while the vast majority of those to go up (20/24) finished in the top five for fewest goals against.

Quite simply, being difficult to beat and grinding out results week in week out is the key to success in the Championship, and Moyes has proven his capabilities of doing that in the past.

Big-club management stands him in good stead

Moyes has managed some big clubs during his career, namely Everton and Manchester United, and that will stand him in good stead at an equally-massive outfit like Villa.

He’ll be well aware of the pressures that come with managing a club like the Villans and would have learnt a lot during his time at both Goodison Park and Old Trafford, regardless of how short his stint at the latter was.

Dealing with the pressure and expectation is a fundamental aspect of managing a big club – Moyes has experienced that and will know how best to meet those expectations should he take over at Villa Park.

Chance to prove the doubters wrong

Ultimately, Moyes has endured difficult times at his previous three clubs, albeit many did feel that he was harshly treated at Manchester United, and thus deserved slightly more time than the ten months he was given.

Nonetheless, taking over at Villa would give him a chance to prove the doubters wrong, something he has done several times before, be it throughout his time at Everton, or indeed by making a bold choice to move to Real Sociedad.

Undoubtedly, leading Villa back to the Premier League would be one of his greatest achievements – the chance to do that and thus reignite his managerial career is likely to appeal to Moyes, and indeed bring the best out of him.

His one last chance in English football

His decision to resign as Sunderland manager back in May seemed to surprise many, especially given his failures at United and Real Sociedad previously.

Thus, it remains to be seen whether he is given another opportunity in English football given the tarnishing of his reputation in recent years, yet Villa may look beyond that and give him that chance.

Ultimately, Moyes will have to deliver – this would arguably be his last chance in English football after what has gone before, and the pressure on him would be enormous given the weight of expectation at a big club like Villa.

And acknowledging this pressure, and indeed the potential consequences of his tenure, is likely to bring the best out of Moyes – it will either ruin his career, or resurrect it after a tough few years.
