News of Jamie Vardy’s impending transfer to Arsenal brought two reactions here in the Tavern.
Half of the fans were shocked, given that it came largely out of the blue. Other fans were disappointed; they wanted Jamie Vardy at their club!
One such set of fans that wanted Vardy, was, surprisingly – Chelsea fans.
And whilst Vardy doesn’t appear to have been a target for the Blues; our landlord thinks that the fact that Chelsea fans would like the Englishman at their club does make a lot of sense.
He would fit in perfectly at Chelsea, and offer them something that they don’t already have.

Misfiring Chelsea Strikers
The simple reason is that Chelsea need to beef up their strike force.
Whilst Diego Costa did find his scoring boots towards the end of last season; for the most part he had a torrid time last year, as did the rest of his side.
Whilst Costa may stay this summer, it looks like Pato, Falcao and Loic Remy will all be leaving SW6 this summer; and what better player to replace them with than Jamie Vardy.
Chelsea are definitely going to go out and buy a striker this summer to replace those that will likely be leaving; Jamie Vardy is the perfect fit to replace them.
Goal scoring record
To discover just how useful Jamie Vardy would be to Chelsea next summer, you only have to look at his goal scoring record.
Vardy scored 24 goals in just 36 league games last season, on route to Leicester winning the Premier League. He was, barring Riyhad Mahrez, their standout player.
Whilst Chelsea strikers faltered last year, Jamie Vardy could not stop scoring, quickly racking up a challenge to Harry Kane for the Golden Boot.
If Chelsea do miss out on such a prolific front man, when they are in so desperate need of one – it would be no less than a disaster, as they begin their charge back to the top.

Another often forgotten trait of Jamie Vardy is the simple fact that he is English.
At its core, this helps the club with homegrown regulations; but perhaps more importantly than that, it gives the fans something else to support.
With John Terry not likely to be a regular feature with the Blues next season, Gary Cahill would likely be the only Englishman in the Chelsea first team.
By bringing in Jamie Vardy the Blues would be able to reignite the English spine that has served them so well over the last decade.
Chelsea fans are clamoring for some more English talent next season; and Jamie Vardy fits that bill.
Fight/Passion
When the going got tough last season; most Chelsea players simply gave up.
Over the last decade, Chelsea players have become renowned for not giving up; perhaps characterized best by their victory in the Champion’s League Final in Munich in 2012.
Last season however, that all seemed to be gone. After a disappointing first half to the season, and with Jose Mourinho sacked, everybody expected the Blues to kick on and make something of their season.
Instead they were happy to settle for draws and losses.
In Vardy, Chelsea would capture a player with raw dedication and passion for his club.
On the pitch, Vardy looks like he cares about the result, and in a team that was so void of any passion last season; Jamie Vardy would be perfect for Chelsea.
The Cost
Whilst nobody is really sure of what Jamie Vardy’s release clause is; most here in the tavern are putting it between £20 and £30 million.
Of course, that’s a lot of cash. But in terms of the inflated English football market; that is comparatively less than what Chelsea would be paying elsewhere.
If Chelsea were to look for a Higuain or a Cavani, the Blues would at least be looking at £50 million; and Vardy is a significantly less risky investment.
Add to that his comparatively low wage cost, and his proven Premier League experience; and their seems to be very little reason to risk going all out for a European superstar.
Whilst Chelsea will no doubt look far and wide for a new striker this summer; it appears exactly what they need is actually on their doorstep.
