The mood around Chelsea was anything but happy during the first third of the season, the club were struggling, dissent was in the ranks and there was a toxic atmosphere from all sides.
First their was the public humiliation of the club’s doctor during the opening day draw against Swansea City, John Terry being dropped for the first time in his Chelsea career, and Diego Costa and Eden Hazard losing form and confidence that helped the club go from champions to relegation candidates in the space of just a few months.
The decision was made to dispense of manager Jose Mourinho just before the busy Christmas period and replace him with Guus Hiddink on an interim basis, until the end of the season.
Since Hiddink has taken over the club have seen an upturn in form, that could even see them achieve a place in the Europa League in May.

Despite his age Hiddink is still keen to achieve and pit his wits against the best managers in the world.
He sets his sides out to win, whatever the game he will name his strongest possible lineup no matter who the opposition are.
To be given the job would give Hiddink the chance to win the Premier League and achieve England’s biggest prize, an offer the Dutchman could find too hard to decline.
Man Management
Ever since his return to the club, the players seem to be a lot happier.
A never say die attitude has emerged from the players, who are now giving their all for the cause for the duration of a game rather than the odd 10-15 minutes.
Big game players are also back to their best with Hazard and Costa looking totally different players, compared to how they began the season.
Experience
You will find it hard to find a more experienced head coach in the world who isn’t afraid to try new ways to win.
He has experience throughout Europe and on the world stage, and if Chelsea take all that into account they would be foolish not to offer him the chance to manage the club on a full time basis.
Hiddink is also not afraid to change things, should the side be struggling during a game.
Will blood players from the youth setup
A big thing Hiddink has done since taking over the club for the second time is bring youth prospects into the first team squad.
One player who has shone since Hiddink’s arrival is Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with the youngster impressing during the FA Cup fourth round demolition of MK Dons.
Owner is a fan
Guus Hiddink has been put in interim charge by Roman Abramovich twice during his time in charge, which is a sign that the Chelsea owner is a fan of the Dutchman.
Our landlord firmly believes that if Hiddink gave the slightest hint that he would like to remain at the club on a full time basis, that Abramovich would have no hesitation in installing the popular Hiddink as manager for next season.
