There’s been a lot of racket in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after it emerged that Arsenal had activated the release clause in Jamie Vardy’s contract with Leicester City. Naturally, there’s a lot of debate.
The 29-year-old only recently broke onto the frame last season, where he helped Leicester win the Premier League crown and, despite that form, many in the bar believe that the striker isn’t quite what Arsene Wenger’s side need.
Well, we’d have to disagree- massively. The striker is the perfect fit for Arsenal- but don’t just take our word for it. Here, we’ve detailed five reasons why he’s exactly what the Gunners need to add to their side.

Goal record
Having hit 24 goals last season, there’s only two names in the Premier League that could rival his stats- Harry Kane, at Tottenham Hotspur, and Sergio Aguero, at Manchester City. It’s fair to say that neither of those will be moving to the Emirates anytime soon.
Vardy though is a signing that can be secured and given his record in front of goal, it’s a no brainer. Add to this the fact that he’s impressed on England duty and there should be no concern about him continuing with those performances in Europe’s elite competition.
Big name
Sure, he may not be Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Robert Lewandowski, but Jamie Vardy is one of the biggest names in English football right now. His signing would certainly sell a lot of shirts, particularly among the young fans, and his abilities would give fans of all ages of huge boost.
The Gunners haven’t had a recognisable number nine for a long, long time and not since the days of Robin Van Persie have they had a striker that can strike fear into the opposition defences- but Vardy can do exactly that breathing a new lease of life into the Gunners attack.
Alternative option
For all the criticism Olivier Giroud gets, he’s not as bad as people make out. Sure, he’s not a 20-goal a season man but he still provides usefulness- and he could work brilliantly alongside Vardy, whether from the start or as a Plan B.
Vardy’s pace and prowess, added to Giroud’s aerial ability and control, could make an excellent strike force. Or, one of them starts from the bench and, when things are’t working, the other is introduced. They’re very different- and that’s a good thing.
Statement of intent
Say what you want, going out and signing the heroic striker from the Premier League winners is a huge statement of intent- it shows the rest of the league, and Europe, that the Gunners mean business and it also shows Arsene Wenger is showing a new side.
Arsenal have already shown they’re not afraid of spending money this summer, having splashed £30m on Granit Xhaka, and signing Vardy would be a much bigger deal- and it could spark a frenzy of panic activities from Arsenal’s rivals.

Blow to rivals
Signing Vardy simply means that none of Arsenal’s rivals can land his signature. Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool. The list of clubs who would want Vardy’s signature is likely to be endless- so Arsenal landing his services would be huge.
Arsenal would boast a striker capable of leading the Premier League scoring charts, pushing the Gunners onto success and hammering a blow into the plans of every other side in the Premier League. Out of all the reasons Arsenal should sign Vardy, this is the most important.
