5 signings who would reinvigorate Chelsea this summer

Chelsea took another step towards a fourth Premier League title, following a 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho and his team are hardly going to win any popularity contests, having once again set out to stifle the opposition rather than look to win the game, but the Special One’s unbeaten record over Wenger remains in tact.

Chelsea now just need victories away at Leicester and at home to Palace in their next two matches to be crowned champions of England for a fifth time, although the ever difficult to impress Roman Abramovich will no doubt be demanding more next season.

The Blues crashed out of the Champions League with a whimper, and have hardly entertained the masses with a brand of football that would be kind to describe as dull.

Here we have identified five summer signings to inject some new life into Chelsea next season – and hopefully a more entertaining style of play!

Aaron Cresswell

There is speculation over the futures of both Branislav Ivanovic and Felipe Luis, so a couple of new full backs may well be on Mourinho’s radar this summer.

Aaron Cresswell has enjoyed a fine debut season in the Premier League with West Ham, following a move from Ipswich last summer.

Tipped as a future England international, Mourinho knows he needs to add some more British talent to the books at Stamford Bridge, and Cresswell’s price tag is certainly appealing with regards to Financial Fair Play.

Nathaniel Clyne

On the opposite flank, Nathaniel Clyne has been up there with the best right backs in the Premier League this season.

Reports continue to link Ivanovic with a move to Paris St Germain, and like Cresswell, Clyne is a young British player that would not only be affordable, but boost Mourinho’s ‘homegrown’ quota at Stamford Bridge.

Clyne has been a key part of a back four that has kept the joint highest number of clean sheets in the Premier League this season, whilst breaking into the England squad in the process.

Raphael Varane

Gary Cahill has not been at his best this season, whilst John Terry is coming towards the end of his glittering Chelsea career.

That leaves Kurt Zouma as the Blues only other out-and-out centre back, so we could well see Mourinho look to add some fresh life into his back four this summer.

Raphael Varane is a player the Chelsea boss is often linked with, having given the French international his chance in the Real Madrid first team.

Varane is competing with Pepe and Sergio Ramos week in week out at the Bernabeu, so the prospect of linking up with Mourinho once more and eventually succeeding a Chelsea legend like John Terry may well be an appealing option to the 21-year-old this summer.

Marco Reus

The Borussia Dortmund star was a Chelsea transfer target for much of the past two transfer windows, yet he surprised everyone by signing a new deal with the Bundesliga giants.

That deal stopped a clause being triggered which would have made the German international available for just £20million this summer, although Chelsea are willing to pay top dollar to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

With Jurgen Klopp set to depart Dortmund at the end of the season, Reus’ future has once again come under the spotlight, and there is no question Mourinho is eager to bring him to Stamford Bridge to compliment the likes of Hazard, Oscar and Willian.

Paul Pogba

Rumours last summer suggested Mourinho had met with Paul Pogba in London to discuss the prospect of a move to Chelsea, however the Frenchman agreed to give Juventus one more season.

Pogba looks set to leave this summer – hopefully after guiding the Italian giants to success in the Champions League – and Chelsea look set to battle Real Madrid for his signature.

Success would send out a major signal to the rest of Europe, with the prospect of Pogba linking up with Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas in midfield next season a mouth-watering one for all Chelsea fans.
