Manchester City are a club steeped in history – and many of our regulars here at the Football Transfer Tavern are having their judgement clouded by the recent investment from the Middle-East.
Despite the efforts of the club to remain a symbol of our community – our locals here at the Football Transfer Tavern are of the belief that the club was formed in 2008 when Sheikh Mansour took control of the prestigious club.
Despite the fact that the club’s fans have been at the receiving end of uneducated chants from opposition supporters – City were in fact formed in 1880, long before a number of other Premier League sides.
Now it’s time to end the misinformed opinions and educate the masses with a few things about Manchester City.
With that said, here are 6 things only Man City fans will understand…
Boring Football
Have you ever felt your side played a boring brand of football? Well you should never complain again unless Stuart Pearce is your manager.
In the 2006/2007 season, the former England captain guided City to Premier League survival by scoring just TEN home goals all season.
The last of these was on January 1st against Everton!
Our West Ham locals should never complain about the style of football Sam Allardyce played during his tenure at Upton Park after Pearce’s tenure!
Typical City
A tag that was added famously by the local media in Manchester to describe City’s ability to make the easy seem impossible.
The two most famous cases of ‘Typical City’ would be the 1999 Second Division Play-Off final against Gillingham – when City were 0-2 down to Tony Pullis’ side and then scored two goals in stoppage time to take the contest to extra-time before being the contest was won on penalties by the Sky Blues.
Most recently, our Manchester United regulars will remember Sergio Aguero’s last minute title-deciding goal against QPR.
The tag of ‘Typical City’ was expected to be lifted, then City somehow nearly managed to concede a first league title in 44 years to their bitter rivals – but by scoring two late goals it prevented the title going to Old Trafford.
Manchester United Domination
Not many clubs can brag they have beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson – but City can.
They not only became the first side to win three consecutive games at the home of United, but on one particular visit across the city they beat them 6-1 in front of a capacity crowd in October 2011.
On this occasion, City were unfortunate not to hit double figures as Mancini’s men ran riot at the home of their bitter rivals.
Never expect a victory at Anfield
Anfield, the home of the second most successful club in English football, Liverpool. It’s also a place that our City locals should never expect to travel to and come away with three points.
Despite Liverpool’s slide down the table in recent years, added with City’s successes, the Manchester side have still failed to beat Liverpool at Anfield since 2002.
A Nicolas Anelka 93rd minute strike in front of the Kop end remains the last winning goal City secured on Merseyside.
Surely a hoodoo that can be ended under new manager Pep Guardiola.
Sergio Aguero is the Premier League’s best player
Whether our landlord or locals think differently, the fact remains that Sergio Aguero is the Premier League’s best player.
Goals in big games, special moments at crucial times and his ability to score from any situation mean the Argentine is the undoubtedly the best player in the league – well according to us City fans.
There is many special players representing rival teams such as Mesut Ozil, Eden Hazard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Aguero’s consistency ensures he remains at the top of a very impressive pool of talent.
Fernandinho will always remain underrated
Signed in 2013 from Shakhtar Donetsk under much criticism from those in attendance at the Football Transfer Tavern – Fernandinho has become paramount to City’s success story in recent times.
His ability to retrieve the ball as quickly as it’s lost, his dynamic and energetic displays and his all round passion mean the Etihad faithful will forever love their Brazilian Prince.
Sadly the love for Fernandinho does not venture past the Etihad Stadium with him yet to receive any major plaudits for his incredible displays in central midfield.
