For the first few months of the 2018/19 season, it was a pretty good time to be a Rangers fan. With Steven Gerrard at the helm, optimism was at high point, and after a few disappointing years, the Gers seemed to be back amongst Scotland’s best teams. For a while, a title challenge looked likely, whilst cup competitions also offered the Gers an opportunity for silverware.
However, after beating Celtic in the Old Firm at the end of 2018, it’s all gone a little bit downhill for Rangers. They’re no longer in a legitimate title race, Aberdeen knocked them out of their second cup this season, and results have been pretty poor over the last few weeks too. In truth, it’s now a pretty rotten time to be a Ger.
That said, throughout all of it, Alfredo Morelos has continued to be the shining light at Ibrox. If fans could pick any major plus point from this season, it would be the fine form of their little Columbian. He’s been truly tremendous all season long, and he’s often been the club’s saving grace.
However, could his fine form actually come back to bite Rangers?
The reality is that Morelos has been so far above everyone else at Rangers this season, and that’s undeniably going to generate interest. Indeed, the Columbian has already confirmed as much, noting to Futbol Red that “many” teams have spoken about signing him, whilst also describing his future plans as not “certain”.
It’s clear then that Morelos fine form hasn’t gone unnoticed, and so not only is that going to lead to interest from other clubs, but it’s also going to leave him wondering about his own future. After all, he will recognise that he’s carried Rangers on his back for much of the season; and so why should he continue to have to save the team when he could be playing for a more competitive team?
Make no mistake, if Morelos were to leave Rangers, the Gers would be in a very tough spot. Gerrard has built his team around his Columbian forward, and he’s not going to be easy to replace. It speaks volumes that Jermain Defoe, one of England’s deadliest forwards ever, has struggled to make an impact with Morelos in the team. He’s just that good.
The point here, then, is that Morelos has starred at the wrong time. He’s stormed ahead of Rangers before Steven Gerrard could make a big impact, and as a result, maybe he could look to leave this summer. If he hadn’t done so well, he’d still have something to prove, and major teams wouldn’t be interested. Let’s not forget, back in March Sky Sports reported that Borussia Dortmund were keen; and that would undeniably be a step up for him.
Rangers face an incredibly tough summer as it is, and Morelos’ situation may only worsen it.
