Reports began to emerge, via the Telegraph, earlier today that Chelsea were keen on Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci – and that has given the Chelsea fans in the Tavern a renewed dash of optimism after a mixed start to the season.
Bonucci, often touted in the Tavern as the best defender in Europe, could be the man to solve the Blues’ defensive woes – after a season that has seen both Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic suffer the brunt of the relentless Chelsea faithful.
Crucially, Bonucci would only form 1/4 of Chelsea’s back line – but who could join him? Our landlord is expecting Conte to shift the Chelsea defense around, should the Italian come to London…

RB – Cesar Azpilicueta
Cesar Azpilicueta was one of the few Chelsea players that covered himself in glory last season, with the Spaniard as consistent as ever – and he has brought his solid form into this season under Conte too.
He is a real fan favourite amongst the Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern, and it easy to see why.
Offering no-nonsense defending against some of the most threatening defenders in Europe – what more can you ask for?
A switch back to his more natural right-hand side will make him feel more comfortable, whilst also making him more of a threat going forward.
CB – Leonardo Bonucci
You know exactly what you’ll be getting in Leonardo Bonucci.
He is a typical Italian defender; strong in the tackle, no thrills and pure determination – exactly what Antonio Conte will be looking for.
Gary Cahill has often tried to be too tricky and silky with the ball and suffered as a result. With Bonucci – you’ll get none of that.
Solid performances week in, week out – exactly what you want from a defender.
CB – Kurt Zouma
Kurt Zouma is yet to make an appearance so far this season, but he is set to return from injury imminently – and Conte must throw him straight back into the Chelsea first team.
Offering raw power and pace whilst still young – Zouma is one for the past, future and present.
He cemented his place in the Chelsea first team prior to his injury – and the Chelsea fans in the Tavern are hoping he will get back to his best immediately.

LB – Marcos Alonso
Marcos Alonso has largely had to settle for a back-seat role so far for the Blues, but given Chelsea’s poor defensive record thus far – that needs to change.
A natural left footer on the left-hand side is a natural progression, and his insertion will allow Azpilicueta to move back to the right.
He looked good last weekend when given a chance, and he is deserving of an extended run in the first team.
He will add balance to an often one-dimensional Chelsea back line.
