Mario Stanic vs West Ham
What a way to introduce yourself to the Chelsea faithful.
Mario Stanic popped up with this worldie on his Chelsea debut – and his career was only ever going to go one way thereafter.
He picked the ball up a few metres into the West Ham half, juggled it and fired it into the back of the net – absolutely unstoppable.
An injury would go on to cut Stanic’s career short, but he’ll always have this goal to reminisce about whenever he gets down about that…
Michael Essien vs Barcelona
A goal for the younger members of the Chelsea faithful here in the Tavern, this one has been aptly titled “Best Goal of 2009” on YouTube – and our landlord is finding it hard to deny that statement.
An unbelievable volley from the edge of the box against Barcelona, this one is absolutely un-saveable.
It also gets a few extra points for what was riding on the game, with Essien popping up with this one in a decisive knock-out game in the 2009 Champions League finals.
A legend was born.
Gianfranco Zola v Norwich
You can’t have a best Chelsea goals list without including Gianfranco Zola. We could have picked a handful of examples, but the Chelsea faithful here in the Tavern hold a special place for this tidy Zola finish against Norwich.
Definitely one from the training ground this; a low drilled ball into the front post from a corner – followed by an audacious flick that only Gianfranco Zola would be able to pull off.
Our landlord thinks that this goal summarises Gianfranco Zola in a Chelsea shirt.
