It’s been a awfully disappointing season for Arsenal this term, as the Gunners looked set for the Premier League title just a few months ago but ended up dropping out of the race to where they are now.
Although the Gunners can still mathematically win the Premier League title, fighting back from an 11 point deficit at this time is a nigh impossible task, even though the Gunners still have a game in hand to play against West Brom.
With so much expectation now set to offer no fruition, Arsenal fans will look back solemnly at this campaign and it’s going to heap more pressure on Arsene Wenger, who celebrates two decades in charge of the Gunners this summer.
This summer also marks the tenth birthday of Arsenal’s glorious Emirates Stadium, though it begs the question- when will the Gunners christen their home with the illustrious Premier League title? Not for a while, it seems…

FA Cup exit
With the Premier League slipping out of reach, Arsenal’s eggs were firmly in one basket as they looked to become the first side in modern football to win the FA Cup for three successive seasons. With the other big clubs out of the tournament, the odds were in Arsenal’s favour.
With Watford visiting the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal had a strong chance of reaching the semi-finals at Wembley once again. However, an awful performance from the Gunners ended with Arsenal exiting the competition.
Losing to Manchester United
On the back of a last-gasp and crucial victory over Leicester City, Arsenal travelled to Old Trafford to face an out of sorts Manchester United side. Like so many other times this season though, the Gunners failed to put in a decent performance.
Marcus Rashford struck two goals against a hapless Arsenal defence, whilst the squad failed to perform to a sufficient level until they were two-goals down. That happened twice and Arsenal responded, but once the margin was just one-goal they disintegrated once again.
Start of Champions League campaign
Arsenal were optimistic ahead of the Champions League campaign this season but it started off awfully. Questions were asked when David Ospina started ahead of star signing Petr Cech and their concerns were well placed.
The Colombian put in two worrying performances, with the big one coming at the Emirates Stadium against Olympiacos when he fumbled a corner over the goal-line. Fortunately Arsenal fought back to progress but they finished second, got Barcelona and were promptly knocked out.
Sheffield Wednesday’s rout
The League Cup isn’t usually a competition where big clubs take too much notice but Arsenal’s defeat to Sheffield Wednesday was compounding. The Championship side tore Arsenal apart, with the Gunners boasting many senior members within the squad, and they faced an early exit.
To add injury to the insults, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott both picked up long-term injury problems and the latter never returned to his full form. Previously he was showing his ability as a striker but, since that injury, he’s failed to impress.
Awful run of form
After drawing 3-3 with Liverpool at Anfield, throwing away a lead right at the death, Arsenal went on an awful run of form that saw them slip from first in the Premier League table down to third and effectively out of the title race.
During this awful period, Arsenal also exited the FA Cup and the Champions League. The Gunners season ended prematurely once again, bringing back awful memories for Gooners worldwide.
