Arrival of £33.2m-rated defender would finally end Cahill’s career at Chelsea – agreed?

Gary Cahill is not a popular man amongst the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern. The Englishman’s form over the last couple of years has been inconsistent at best, and our landlord isn’t sure that he has a long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Whether that’s the case or not remains to be seen, but one thing seems certain: his future will be much clearer if Chelsea land one of their targets this summer.

Over the last few days, Chelsea have been linked with a move for Roma defender Kostas Manolas, with Alfredo Pedulla reporting that the Blues are keen on him. He’s rated at €38 million (£33.2 million), as per his release clause.

Whether he would come in and replace Cahill remains to be seen, but our landlord thinks that if Chelsea sign him, it could certainly mean the end of the road for Cahill. After all, his game time has been limited over the last few months already – and signing another defender of that quality would certainly have an impact.

Not to mention, Manolas has been in sensational form. He was Roma’s hero in the Champions League, having scored a vital goal against Barcelona, whilst his defensive quality is also second to none.

Fantastic in the air, agile, quick, strong – the Greek ace genuinely has it all, and if Chelsea don’t snap him up, it’s only a matter of time before someone else does.

At 27-years-old, Chelsea would have a relatively long-term replacement for Cahill in Manolas, and it’s tough to disagree with the sentiment that they would also be getting a big upgrade.

Cahill’s been a great servant for Chelsea, but if this deal happens, it will be time to move on.
