Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta would have been over the moon following the Gunners’ 2-0 victory against Manchester City as it means he has the chance to win silverware in his first season as manager.
It would have been extra sweet for supporters of the north London outfit as they lost 3-0 to City just after football returned, and it highlights how much improvement the club has made in a short period of time.
Clearly their good performance has not gone unnoticed and despite the hiccup against rivals Tottenham, Alan Shearer has been heaping praise on the Gunners defence.
Writing for The Sun, the former Newcastle United forward said: “Arsenal’s defence was magnificent in their two totally unexpected victories against Liverpool and Manchester City.
“There hasn’t been many times this season when we have associated The Gunners with great defending, togetherness, team spirit and organisation.
“But in those last two performances that was exactly how it was. If Mikel Arteta can make that the norm he will be a very happy man indeed.”
It’s hard to disagree with Shearer here, for the club to lose that game against Tottenham and then a week later have picked up two victories against Premier League champions Liverpool and runners-up Manchester City whilst only conceding one goal is something that should be praised.
Especially when it has involved the same defence including players like David Luiz, who has made calamitous errors this season and been heavily criticised.
Hopefully Arsenal can keep this good form up for their last three games, but the last two wins will give supporters a lot of hope for next season as Arteta will get a pre-season under his belt for the first time as manager.
