Arsenal’s deal to bring Dani Ceballos to the Emirates Stadium for the upcoming campaign has cost the club a total of £15m, according to reports.
The Sun claims that the deal includes a loan fee on top of paying the Spaniard’s wages – of which The Daily Star says amount to £60,000 per week – or just over £3m per year, leaving a remaining sum of £12m.
And with the agreement said not to include an obligation to buy the 22-year-old upon completion of the loan, it may seem that Arsenal are paying a rather high amount for temporary gains when taking their financial resources into account.
According to The Daily Star, Real Madrid have decided not to pay anything towards the youngster’s wages – leaving the Gunners to foot the bill.
The Gunners have just splashed a reported £27m on William Saliba from Saint-Etienne – and an extra £12m in transfer fees would take them to the very limit of their budget, though they have already spent around £6m on young forward Gabriel Martinelli.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Gunners have only seen goalkeeper David Ospina leave for a fee, though Serie A side Napoli have only stumped up just over £3m for the privilege of making the Colombian’s loan move permanent.
One way or another, the figures don’t seem to be adding up at Arsenal. Either way, if the true price of making Ceballos a Gunners player is as weighty as has been reported – suddenly the merits of the Spaniard’s arrival on loan could take some convincing with the club thought to be strapped for cash this summer.
Rated at £27m by Transfermarkt, Ceballos may still be capable of delivering at a level worthy enough of being labelled a bargain come the end of the season, but with the midfielder expected to return to the Bernabeu at that point whatever happens, there is a risk that Arsenal’s reported outlay on the Spaniard could be wasted if he fails to help achieve the target of reaching the Champions League.
