Many Arsenal fans loved Per Mertesacker’s display in the 2017 FA Cup final where the north London club beat the Premier League champions at the time, Chelsea, 2-1 at Wembley to secure a record 13th FA Cup title and the seventh under former manager Arsene Wenger.
As per the BBC, Mertesacker played a key part in the win, as the outlet described his performance as ‘faultless’ and gave a ‘masterclass in positioning, timing and making crucial interceptions’. Some supporters definitely agreed with the ‘masterclass’ analysis and expressed their opinions on Twitter. This display was especially impressive considering that he had only played 37 minutes in the entire campaign before starting in the final.
‘The BFG’ as the German was known by people at the club is now the Head of the Arsenal Academy. Mertesacker made 221 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions, winning three FA Cups in total, according to Transfermarkt. The 35-year old also made 104 appearances for Germany and won the World Cup in Brazil with them in 2014.
These Gooners loved their former captain’s display and showed their appreciation after highlights were posted on the club’s official Twitter page:
