Arsenal fans on Twitter pleased for Welbeck as striker gets England call-up

The England squad was announced yesterday as Gareth Southgate prepares his squad for upcoming fixtures against Spain and Switzerland in the newly formed UEFA Nations League. Out of the 23-man squad that went to the World Cup, 19 are in this squad as Southgate aims for continuity.

Welbeck did very little at the World Cup and whilst he’ll be pleased to have made the squad this time around, he’ll be desperate to get more action than he did over the summer. The 27-year-old striker got off the mark for Arsenal against West Ham last weekend and with one more fixture against Cardiff before travelling to meet with the national team, Welbeck will be desperate to get another goal and force himself some minutes.

The ex-Manchester United man has 40 England caps to his name and 16 goals in those appearances, and whilst he may be one of those who’s been in the squad for a long time, it’s unlikely he’ll force his way into contention ahead of the likes of Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford. If there’s one thing he does have, though, it’s versatility and his ability to play on the flank could see Southgate shoehorn him into the starting lineup for the upcoming fixtures.

The Gunners are delighted for Welbeck and will be hoping he can make an appearance for the Three Lions.
