Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have raised questions over news in the London Evening Standard which says that Barcelona’s Thomas Vermaelen could return to the Emirates after leaving last summer.
His departure left a massive hole in the defence and punters believe that Arsene Wenger never really found a replacement.
Wenger’s failure to sign a replacement for Vermaelen was slightly covered up by the arrival of Calum Chambers from Southampton, who has had an impressive season, considering his age.
He didn’t play consistently in the season before he left North London and he moved to Barca with the underlying belief that he would step in the shoes of Carlos Puyol.
The defender is certainly technically gifted with the ball at his feet, and the defenders rarely defend due to the Catalan’s domination in Spain.
But it didn’t go to plan for the Belgium international and he is currently out injured with a hamstring injury and he is expected to return back to Luis Enrique’s side in April, which would leave only one month left in La Liga.
A plethora of Gooners sipping on pints here in the Transfer Tavern, say thet would welcome back Vermaelen with open arms, providing they get him for less than they sold him for!
