Reports from Italy suggest that Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira could leave the club, with Arsenal among the clubs interested in his signature.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Serie A champions are said to be considering selling a number of players, with the likes of Valencia and Fiorentina also taking an interest in the German.
The World Cup winner, now 32, only featured 10 times in the league for the Turin giants last season, with the likes of Blaise Matuidi and Miralem Pjanic above him in the pecking order as injuries affected his campaign.
And Juventus have recently added in central midfield, thanks to the arrivals of Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey (from Arsenal, of course) – both on free transfers.
While there is now talk of a belated swap, this is not the first time Khedira has been linked with a move to North London, with reports in Spain claiming Arsenal and Real Madrid – Khedira’s club at the time – had reached an agreement for the German’s transfer back in 2014.
We now know that it never transpired, but reports are now linking the defensive midfielder with the Gunners once again.
However, Arsenal – like Juventus – have also recently recruited in central midfield, following their recent signing of Dani Ceballos, almost ironically from Real Madrid himself.
Meanwhile, young midfielder Joe Willock is potentially looking at a future first-team place after being involved occasionally last year as well as during the Gunners’ pre-season tour, scoring in Arsenal’s comfortable win over Fiorentina.
So for Khedira to be on Arsenal’s radar with that in mind, he would arguably be looking at adding to a midfield just as congested and competitive as the one he may depart at Juventus in the near future.
All things considered, with Di Marzio implying that Fiorentina seem best-placed to sign the 32-year-old this summer and Arsenal’s recent activity in the transfer market, perhaps this is one that Unai Emery would be willing to let go, especially taking into account the club’s supposed lack of funds and the current depth of options in that area at present.
