Arsenal to offer contract to Serie A reject in the next few weeks?

olsenArsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are sceptical over the news in Metro that Arsene Wenger is interested in signing former Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Olsen on a free transfer.

The 20-year-old’s contract was cancelled last week by the Italian club after he failed to move on in January.

He has since been on trial with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem but Wenger could yet make a swoop for the youngster.

The reason why the Eredivisie club have not been able to sign Olsen already as a free agent is because an out of contract player cannot join a new club outside of the transfer window although that would not stop the Gunners offering him a contract in the coming weeks.

Some of our resident Gooners quip that Arsenal haven’t enjoyed the best luck when signing Danish exports in years gone by.

Of course, everybody still remembers the colourful Nicklas Bendtner – now at Wolfsburg – but our elder Gunners fans still remember John Jensen, the man who made 132 appearances, scoring just one goal despite being a midfielder.

Olsen however has a lot of potential and boasts three caps for Denmark’s Under-21 side but struggled out on loan to Norwegian side Stromsgodset where he only made six appearances while remarkably managing to get himself sent off three times for their reserve side.
