Everton manager David Moyes has joined Arsene Wenger in the race for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Afellay. Only last week when discussing his future Afellay told the media he would prefer a move to Manchester United or Liverpool, God knows why?!
Afellay is twenty four years old and can play in a number of positions across the midfield. For his current club he tends to play down the centre, getting forward and supporting the strikers. He can also play on either wing. Since coming into the first team squad at PSV in 2003, aged only seventeen, he has made one hundred and forty nine league appearances. In that time he has scored a not too shabby forty one goals. He has also made thirty appearances for Holland, scoring seven times. In 2007 he was awarded the Johan Cruyff Young Player of the Year award.
Despite having a pretty strong midfield, David Moyes seems intent on bringing in more players for that position. A striker or a defender would be a useful addition to their squad, but another midfielder? They already have Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta, Marouane Fellaini, Steven Pienaar and Jack Rodwell, not to mention a few others.
Arsenal are in the same boat really, a host of talented midfielders when they clearly need to strengthen elsewhere. They’ve got Cesc Fabregas, Jack Wilshere, Samir Nasri, Andrei Arshavin and a few more, yet not one good goalkeeper.
Either way they’re both going to have to be persuasive as Wesley Sneijder is hoping he’ll join him at Inter. Sneijder said: “”Afellay is ready for the next step. He should leave Holland and would fit in well at Inter. I told him that myself, he knows what we think of him here at Inter. I like playing with him because he understands me – and that’s not easy.”
Very manipulative Wesley, very manipulative indeed.
