Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash is likely to miss his side’s Premier League clash against Leeds United this weekend, according to journalist Ashley Preece.

The Lowdown: Villa head to Leeds

Steven Gerrard’s men make the trip to Elland Road on Sunday afternoon as they look to slowly climb up the league table after a poor start to the season.

Another bad result this weekend would heap further pressure on the 42-year-old, and the manager isn’t without injury concerns going into the match.

One of those who has been struggling is Cash, with the right-back tackling a hamstring issue after going off early in the 1-1 draw against Manchester City last month.

The Latest: Cash expected to miss out

Taking to Twitter on Friday, Preece stated that the Poland international was ‘expected’ to be ruled out against Leeds.

The reporter tweeted:

“Matty Cash (hamstring) back in partial training & expected to miss Leeds.”

Aston Villa fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the 21/22 season?

The Verdict: Experienced head a big loss

Cash may not be his club’s marquee performer but he is a safe pair of hands with 74 Villa appearances to his name, so he will be a loss for Gerrard’s team on Sunday.

He has averaged 2.2 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game in the league this season, topping the Villa squad for the latter metric, and his defensive nous will be missed in what could be a cauldron of an atmosphere at Elland Road.

It means that 37-year-old Ashley Young could fill in for Cash, which certainly isn’t ideal for Gerrard, given his age and the fact that he could arguably be targeted by Leeds, and specifically Jack Harrison.

The veteran did quite well against Man City when he came on for Cash, though, winning four tackles and six of his seven duels, and his experience will hopefully shine through again this weekend.
