The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were eagerly anticipating a hectic deadline day…
Chelsea had suffered from a relatively quiet build up to the final day, with most of their big money deals being agreed during pre-season.
Still, their spending needed to be far from over, with a desperate need for new faces at Stamford Bridge.
One player that most expected to join the club as Fernando Llorente. A long-term target, the Blues were linked with the Spaniard in the lead-up to the end of the summer, and it appeared to be a foregone conclusion.
That was until Tottenham got involved, at least, with the Lilywhites moving in on the final day in an effort to gazump Chelsea.
Gazump them they did. Tottenham managed to secure the signature of Llorente from under the noses of Chelsea – paying the Blues back from when they did the same thing with Willian a few years ago.
It was a disappointing blow for Chelsea. At present, they have just Michy Batshuayi and Alvaro Morata to call upon in the role, leaving Antonio Conte short of options this season.
That said, the Chelsea fans on Twitter don’t appear to be too down in the dumps about the deal, with many brushing it off in favour of the deals they did complete on the final day…
Not perfect but never a nightmare. Ox,Ross n Llorente are all not that good for CHELSEA.I am happy to miss them out.#CFC

Why is missing out on #deadlineday seen as a bad thing? Barkley, Ox & Llorente are dodged bullets for the ££. Squad players at best #CFC

Who cares about bottling Ox, Llorente … all mediocre players not worthy of Chelsea shirt.
We should be after Mahrez, Sánchez, Sandro …— My Rabona (@HazardRabona) August 31, 2017
