Chelsea’s managerial future is looking uncertain, and that’s not good news for the Blues in the Transfer Tavern. Antonio Conte, after a poor season, is certainly treading on eggshells, and it remains to be seen whether the Italian will still be in the job come next season.
Naturally, then, it wasn’t a surprise to hear reports from Sky Sports this week suggesting that the Blues had identified a potential replacement in the form of Mauricio Pochettino. Though undoubtedly an audacious target, the Argentine would, in theory, be a fantastic choice, and so the news will likely have delighted fans.
However, now it seems as though the Blues have been handed a blow in their pursuit of Pochettino.
Pochettino, of course, was always going to be a difficult manager to land, but Chelsea’s task has now gotten a lot more difficult.
Landlord’s Verdict
Even if sacking Antonio Conte isn’t on the immediate agenda, Chelsea need to prepare in the event that their hand is forced, and they need to target someone they can rely on. Pochettino would certainly offer that, and so this news will come as a huge blow to the club and particularly to Roman Abramovich – who seems likely to handle much of the search for a new boss given his prior involvement.
That said, it’s obviously great news for Spurs, as keeping him at the club as they move back home to their new stadium will be crucial as they continue to adjust.
It’s back to the drawing board for the Blues though, it seems.
