Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are rubbing their eyes in disbelief at the latest rumour coming from the continent, linking a European giant to one of their excelling stars.
The Independent suggest Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is a target for Barcelona in January, as the Catalan side eye moves to replace the injured Rafinha and strengthen their squad after a year-long transfer ban.
Walcott, currently sidelined until after the November international break through injury, has excelled in a central role this season and has become a catalyst in Arsenal’s charge for the Premier League title.
However, the England international faces stiff competition from Olivier Giroud; who is enjoying a run in the side with Walcott’s absence and has scored crucial goals against Swansea City and Bayern Munich in recent weeks.
Whether Arsenal would part with the 26-year-old, whom they have developed superbly since signing him as a teenager from Southampton, remains to be seen and it’s unlikely Walcott would swap regular first-team football to compete with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez in Catalonia.
However, Arsenal supporters playing pool are concerned that the attraction of Barcelona could prove to be tempting for Walcott- who would become the first Three Lions player to play for the Catalan giants since Gary Linekar in 1986.
