The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are still in disbelief from yesterday’s World Cup group game between Brazil and Switzerland. Brazil started strongly and went ahead with a stunning goal from former Red, Philippe Coutinho, although they were held 1-1. The fans believe things would have been different had their striker, Roberto Firmino, been given a start.

Firmino was brought into the game for Brazil with just 12 minutes left to play after watching Gabriel Jesus have little impact against a tough Swiss backline for over 75 minutes of football. In his time on the pitch, Firmino looked more dangerous than the Manchester City striker and he can feel rightly aggrieved that he wasn’t able to start for the Selecao in their opening group game. Fans can read about Fimrino’s cameo on the Liverpool website.
There was a lot of talk in the build-up to the World Cup over who would start up front for Brazil, with Gabriel Jesus the superior goal-getter of the two. However, Firmino’s ability to bring his teammates into the game with his link-up play and passing he would most definitely do more to help the likes of Willian, Neymar and Coutinho impress in Russia. However, the five-time winners elected against Firmino and faced the consequences as they failed to win their opening game of a World Cup for the first time since 1978.
You can read our frustrated Kopites’ verdict on Firmino here:
Any City fan wanna try tell me Jesus should start for Brazil ahead of Firmino after last night? It’s baffling how he stayed on so long. It’s ok to admit that a lad 5 years younger then Firmino, isn’t on his level just yet. Firmino has to start because he’s Brazil’s best striker

Did more in the little time than Jesus did all game

He should start next game, way better than G.Jesus

Too late. How he isn’t ahead on Jesus is beyond me

The game would have been different if he was introduced earlier

It’s criminal that he’s not a starter. #Shaqiri looked impressive enough for £11m.

The Reds propping our bar up won’t be happy until they see their man thrown a start for his national team, as they’re still trying to get over the fact he only made the bench.
