Brentford have signed former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on a two year deal following his departure from Ajax. The 35 year agreed to end his contract with the Dutch club earlier this week and prioritized a return to England as he bids to keep his place in the England set up.

He is now set for a shock Premier League return with Brentford. The Bees see Henderson as an experienced leader on the pitch and in the dressing room – after seeing their former skipper Christian Norgaard leave the club to join Arsenal earlier this week.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Henderson has already completed his medical and put pen to paper on his deal. Official announcement from Brentford is set to follow.

Henderson spent 12 years at Liverpool, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup and Community Shield.

Henderson to make Premier League return

He left Liverpool in 2023 to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq but departed after less than six months, joining Ajax in January of 2024.

He made more than 50 appearances for Ajax and last season narrowly missed out on the league title, surrendering their lead to PSV Eindhoven on the final day the season. The player and club came to a mutual agreement to end his contract early, with Henderson seeking a return to the Premier League ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

Henderson was a notable omission from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, at the time having not played for England since 2023.

Following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as England head coach in January however, Henderson has featured in both of the German’s squads and made three appearances.

He will look to kick on with Brentford who will have a new look following the departure of head coach Thomas Frank. Set piece coach Keith Andrews has now been appointed as head coach of the Bees, who could have further rebuilding to do should they lose another key man in Bryan Mbeumo.
