Bruno Fernandes’ arrival could get the very best out of Gylfi Sigurdsson at Everton

Fernandes

According to a recent report from A Bola (via 90min), Everton are one side interested in a January move for Bruno Fernandes. The 24-year-old currently plays his football at Portuguese heavyweights Sporting Lisbon and has done so since leaving Sampdoria back in 2017, with his mightily impressive efforts in the Primeira Liga seemingly attracting the interest of Toffees manager Marco Silva.

And that’s because reports suggest that the Merseysiders, as well as rivals Liverpool, are keen on a January move for the £23.4 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), whose move to Goodison Park could indeed get the very best out of fellow attacker Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, Iceland international Sigurdsson has made the number ten spot his own since making the move from Swansea City back in the summer of 2017, appearing 55 times in all competitions for the Toffees since then, netting on 15 occasions.

And with nine of those goals coming this time round in what has been a much-improved campaign from the 29-year-old, it appears as though he was very much going from strength to strength in Silva’s side, and as such looks set to play a key role in whatever success they have under the Portuguese.

However, the arrival of fellow attacking midfielder Fernandes is likely to place a great deal of pressure on Sigurdsson’s shoulders given just how impressive the 24-year-old has been at Sporting, with it likely forcing the Icelandic ace to produce his best form to stay in the team ahead of the Portugal international.

24-year-old Fernandes has been in wonderful form in recent times in netting 14 goals and laying on nine assists in just 27 appearances for Sporting this term, six goals and five assists of which have come in their run to fourth place in the Primeira Liga, with two goals and two assists coming in their run to second place in Group E of the Europa League.

Add in his incredible tally of 16 goals and 20 assists last term for the Portuguese heavyweights, and it’s clear that Sigurdsson will have a huge fight on his hands to retain his place in Silva’s starting eleven were Fernandes to arrive – as such, he’d have to produce his very best on a consistent basis to remain at the summit of the pecking order.

And having enjoyed a decent season so far with eight Premier League goals to his name, it’s certainly in the 29-year-old to produce that level of performance, although with no genuine threat to his number ten position, one wonders just how much more he could give were he pushed by someone equally as talented – Fernandes is certainly in that category.

So while a move for the 24-year-old may appear as bad news to Sigurdsson on the surface, it may just provide the incentive to produce his very best form for Everton were the Portugal international to move to Goodison Park.
