Burnley are actively working to sign young Liverpool centre-back Sepp van den Berg this summer, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.
The Lowdown: Van den Berg shines at Preston
The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Preston North End, with Jurgen Klopp unable to guarantee him anything close to regular minutes at Anfield.
The Dutchman will again likely be loaned out by the Reds this summer – he’s still got Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk in front of him in the pecking order – and Burnley appear to be in the conversation.
The Latest: Burnley ‘action’
Taking to Twitter, Nixon was asked whether there is any interest in Sporting CP winger Jovane Cabral, and while he says Vicent Kompany is looking at wingers, van den Berg is the only move currently in ‘action’:
“Looking for that position…not heard that yet…think action right now around van den Berg.”
The Verdict: Strong summer option
The 6 foot 2 Van den Berg could be an excellent signing by Burnley, having proved that he can excel in a physical Championship before, averaging 3.2 clearances and 2.9 aerial duel wins per game for Preston last season.
Will Burnley get promoted this season?
The Liverpool youngster would provide Kompany with much-needed options after James Tarkowski and Ben Mee moved on, strengthening the Clarets’ promotion charge in the process and potentially even forming a long-term partnership with Taylor Harwood-Bellis, if they could eventually be signed permanently that is.
Van den Berg also possesses the sort of quality on the ball Kompany requires from his men – he enjoyed an 88.4% pass completion rate for his previous club PEC Zwolle back in 2018/19.
