Now an established Premier League outfit under the guidance of Sean Dyche, Burnley are no stranger to splashing the cash. Indeed, though they may not spend as extravagantly as some of their divisional rivals, the Clarets have broken their club record a number of times over the last few years in an attempt to push into the top half of the English elite.
So, keeping up to do with the latest Burnley transfer rumours can be difficult. With that in mind, the Football Transfer Tavern have created a hub you can visit for breaking news, latest gossip or fan conversations across the January and summer transfer windows, as well as everything in between.
The tale of Burnley’s current transfer record is certainly interesting. Indeed, two players are tied at the £15m mark, though their respective careers at Turf Moor have gone very differently.
In August 2017, striker Chris Wood arrived from Leeds United and has since proven a competent goalscorer in the Premier League, scoring over 30 goals in just over 100 appearances for the Lancashire side. Compare that with the same fee paid for Ben Gibson 12 months later and it shows you just how easily money is wasted when deals go wrong.
Indeed, the former Boro man has struggled to oust either Ben Mee or James Tarwoski and was even training with his former side recently, given his lack of involvement down in Lancashire. Clearly, breaking into this kind of side – one that has grown together into one of the most effective in the Premier League – is no mean feat.
In recent years, the Clarets have had a penchant for buying strikers before selling them on for profit. Moves for Charlie Austin, Danny Ings and Andre Gray have all paid off in recent memory but it was a move, initially back in 2002, that gave the Clarets perhaps their most modern son.
Robbie Blake, a £1m signing from Bradford, played over 200 games for the club and was their record goalscorer with 62 for a number of years before Sam Vokes surpassed his total recently.
Luring Belgian creator Steven Defour to Turf Moor from Anderlecht in 2016 at club-record expense was a big coup too, though it didn’t really work out in that he was released from his contract three years later after making just 50 appearances.
Given the specific brand of football deployed by Dyche in Lancashire, Burnley look for a certain type of player. Along with Mike Rigg behind the scenes, the Clarets tend to focus on functional players rather than flair ones in order to fit into their style of play, so it’ll be interesting to see who they turn to this time.
Elsewhere, January saw young winger Dwight McNeil linked with moves away from the club amid some impressive form under Dyche, so expect his name to regularly feature in gossip columns.
