With the news breaking from Arsene Wenger’s press conference, the Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern are debating who should they be going for come January.

Wenger has admitted that both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil could leave the Gunners this January, while both can leave on a free, the board might like to try and get some cash involved if they don’t do a very surprising U-turn and sign contracts.

To replace Mesut Ozil, Arsenal would have to be their previous David Dein-inspired shrewd selves in bringing in some quality players that can add to the squad and start to finally look like a team that can compete on a domestic level.

Our punters think to replace Ozil, three players would have to come in, each with a different attribute to compensate for the German’s loss.

Though he’s not currently in the team, when he is, he certainly adds an extra dimension to it in an attacking sense.

With that in mind, our pot cleaner thinks these three players will do the job…

Jack Butland

With the ageing Petr Cech into his twilight years, Wenger will be looking for the next number one at the Emirates. David Ospina won’t cut the mustard at the club but a young up-coming keeper will.

Jack Butland, an England international, is the likely successor to Joe Hart and will be fighting hard for that place come summer 2018.

Indeed, the Stoke shot-stopper will be looking to make the move up in terms of clubs stature and Arsenal may be the perfect move for him.

Virgil Van Dijk

After a summer transfer saga with Liverpool and Southampton holding onto their man, you feel like it’s only a matter of time before the centre-half makes the move out of St. Mary’s Stadium.

Arsenal could swoop in for the colossalDutchmann and would improve their defence immediately, also getting one up on their top 6 rival Liverpool will help their push to regain Champions League football next season.

Could be the next Tony Adams for the Gunners.

Riyad Mahrez

A long-term target for Arsenal, Mahrez is the kind of player that fits Wenger’s mould and thinking and would be a perfect replacement for Ozil.

Able to pull strings centrally or move out wide, the playmaker would be the ideal foil for the other members of the Arsenal attack.

He’s proved it in the Premier League in recent years and is looking for a move out of the Foxes, if Arsene can convince the Algerian to make the switch this could be a brilliant signing.
