The Blues have been linked with Anderlecht forward Romelu Lukaku for ages, the 17 year old Belgian has been dubbed the new Didier Drogba and the player himself has said he wishes to emulate the huge Ivorian.
It is a pretty badly kept secret that Lukaku will move on to more glamarous things (no offence intended to any fans of Anderlecht reading this!) over the Summer and it is thought the players prefered destination would be Chelsea to link up with his hero, a bid of £13million could convince Anderlecht to sell.
There is now however a second forward threatening the bank account of Roman Abramovich – that threat is 23 year old Uruguyan striker Edinson Cavani. Cavani is currently playing for Napoli (on loan from Palermo) and has scored an impressive 17 goals in 22 appearences so far this season, a versatile player he is capable of playing wide and as a second striker but his natural position is as a striker.
It is rumoured in Italian press that it would take more money to sign Cavani than Lukaku (it wouldn’t take much money to persuade me to get out of Naples!) so it seems a quandary that will likely cause the Chelsea chief to raise that left eyebrow even higher.
I would choose Lukaku, he seems a natural replacement for Drogba who doesn’t have too many more seasons left in him. On the other hand the move could be complicated by the fact that Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal are also interested. Cavani is a tricky player with a definite eye for goal, but players successful in Italy can often struggle here, where as Lukaku is younger and seems to have all the physical qualities needed to succeed in the Premiership.
