No goals in three for Edouard
The 22-year-old was outstanding for the Hoops during the 2019/20 campaign, helping the club secure their ninth successive league title, scoring 21 goals and providing 12 assists from 27 outings (TransferMarkt).
As Neil Lennon’s side aim to clinch an unprecedented 10th crown in a row, they have not started in the manner that they would have liked as they sit second in the standings, six points behind arch-rivals Rangers who are still unbeaten (via BBC Sport).
After testing positive for coronavirus at the beginning of last month (via STV), the £13.5m-rated star has scored just four goals from seven games and he has not scored in his last three appearances for the club (Whoscored).
Speaking with CQN, Hughes was not impressed with Edouard and believes his performances since the Hamilton game have been disappointing.
“When Odsonne kicked off the Premiership campaign with a hat-trick in the 5-1 win over Hamilton Accies at the start of August, I thought we were in for an action replay of last term when he claimed 28 goals”, he said.
“Back then, the French ace was on fire and no-one was one bit surprised he was at the centre of transfer speculation during the summer. Who wouldn’t be interested in a player of his quality and pedigree?
“However, since his three goals against Accies, the player has struggled. Even before he tested positive with coronavirus, he was way off the pace.
“Neil Lennon hauled him off a couple of times when it was clear he was under-performing. He was virtually anonymous in the 2-1 win over St Mirren in Paisley where he squandered a penalty-kick and was replaced before the end.
“He also asked to be given a rest for the match against Livingston at Parkhead last month. Why? What was the problem? Surely, he couldn’t have been tired or stressed out? Not after only six league games into the season.”
Despite these comments, Hughes went on to say that he was fit enough to play against Aberdeen this afternoon, then he would allow him to do so.
Transfer Tavern take
Edouard looks like a man who has not had much rest during the end of last season and the start of the current one, and catching coronavirus certainly would not have helped his recovery.
While ‘big Yogi’ raises some fair points about the France U21 international, there appear to be many cumulative factors that may explain his lack of form.
That being said, Lennon is in desperate need to have Edouard back firing as soon as possible. If he is available to play today, then he should feature and be given the opportunity to find his form once again.
