Chelsea fans are looking slightly shocked here in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Daily Star Sunday note that they very nearly missed out on their number one target this summer.

Diego Costa has been a total revelation since arriving at Stamford Bridge and as our regulars note, has been a major part of Chelsea’s success this season ending his four game goal drought against Hull City yesterday.

However, a move was close to failing with Mourinho nearly overlooking the forward.

That was until Sergio Aguero decided to make the move to England and Radamel Falcao left Atletico Madrid and allowed Costa the chance to shine at the Vicente Calderon.

Mourinho claimed: “Everyone was blind, including myself. At Atletico, Aguero was the superstar.”

Given the form of Sergio Aguero, we are not surprised that Mourinho nearly missed Costa when the duo were both at Atletico Madrid.

However, we certainly think that both men will be key in the Premier League title race and keeping them fit will be a challenge for both Chelsea and Manchester City, with the latter already failing!
