The Serbian really struggled last season, with Guus Hiddink dropping him towards the end of the season, having failed to live up to expectations after a fine start to life in a Chelsea shirt.
Under Conte, however, he has regained his form, and his performances alongside N’Golo Kante have been spectacular. No longer having to carry the defensive burden of an entire team, he has been given more freedom to play his own game – and it has returned an impressive run of form.
Antonio Conte has seemingly been as delighted as the Blues in the Transfer Tavern, with Tutto Mercato Web reporting that a new contract is close to being finalised.
Significantly, the publication also report that a deal could be announced within a matter of weeks – which will come as a huge boost to the Blues as the buisness end of the season begins to pick up.
With 11 games to go in the Premier League, Chelsea need to ensure that their form doesn’t slip – and Matic will be a key part of that.
N’Golo Kante has often been given the plaudits this season, but Matic is somewhat of an unsung hero. Offering a decent threat going forward whilst also mopping up at the back – he is vital.
