Metro have excited Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they claim that the Blues have made a bid for an out-of-favour Real Madrid defender.
Now before you go and get all excited, we should probably point out that that player is former Liverpool right back Alvaro Arbeloa and not Raphael Varane who Chelsea have also been heavily linked to.
Our regulars note that Jose Mourinho and Arbeloa were very close during their time spent together at Real Madrid and the defender ended up on the wrong side of Los Blancos legend Iker Casillas after publicly backing his manager.
Given Mourinho wants to go to war with the world in the second half of the season, the Spaniard nicknamed a ‘Spartan’ by his team-mates could well be the ideal recruit.
Despite Arbeloa’s love for Mourinho, we are not totally convinced with his defensive capabilities but at least he knows the Premier League well following his previous spell at Anfield.
