Though the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are happy with Antonio Conte’s squad, they are hopeful that a few new signings will be made in January. The Blues are going to have a lot of games to contend with in 2018, with the Champions League, Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League all set to rumble on. As such, depth is needed, and so January will be key.
Unsurprisingly, then, the latest report emanating from the Daily Express has led to a lot of happy faces in the pub. According to the Daily Express, Chelsea are ‘expected’ to move for Juventus star Alex Sandro in January, with Antonio Conte refusing to give up on a player that he was also keen on over the summer.
A left-back by trade, Sandro would likely be expected to compete with Marcos Alonso on the left-hand side of the Chelsea defence. This is significant because Alonso has been forced to man the position on his own for much of the season, with very little depth beyond the Spaniard, and so further competition in the role is just what the Blues need.
For Sandro’s part, his fine form has continued this season, having racked up 3 assists and 1 goal in 9 Serie A appearances. He’s undoubtedly one of the best left-backs playing in Europe at present, and so Marcos Alonso would have his work cut out to stay ahead of him. That’s only going to make each performer play better, though, so Chelsea will certainly benefit.
Landlord’s Verdict
A move for Sandro would, undoubtedly, be massive for Chelsea – but it remains to be seen whether it will be realistic.
The Blues were unable to land him over the summer, and there have been no noises out of Turin to suggest that a move will be any more possible in January or, indeed, next summer.
Antonio Conte certainly seems hopeful that his club will be able to secure the impossible, though.
