Chelsea eye £22 million move for breakout 22-year-old

The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern aren’t too sure about this one…

Despite a strong return to form, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is seemingly still not content with the nature of his side.

According to the Sun, Chelsea are eyeing a £22m move for Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles – who is enjoying a breakout season with the Magpies in the Championship this season.

Conte’s pursuit of defensive depth has been long discussed in the Football Transfer Tavern, and whilst the Blues in attendance were hopeful of a big money foreign signing; it would appear that Antonio Conte is prepared to look a little bit closer to home.

Lascelles has impressed for Newcastle this season, with the Magpies currently sitting atop the Championship. Lascelles himself has played an impressive 14 times, having recently been named club captain by Rafa Benitez.

Whilst the 22-year-old Dutch defender has impressed this season – this proposed move has been met with some criticism in the Football Transfer Tavern.

A few of the Chelsea fans leaning by the bar have suggested that Lascelles does not have the experience that a side like Chelsea will demand – and there are far better options outside of England that could better serve Conte’s needs.

On the contrary, our landlord thinks that a homegrown player of Lascelles ilk would be absolutely perfect for Antonio Conte.
