The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed with Willy Caballero this season. The Argentine swapped Man City for the Blues over the summer, and he has been tasked with playing second-fiddle to Thibaut Courtois.
It’s certainly been no easy feat, given how good Courtois has been, but he has delivered. Whenever he has played he has looked good, and the importance of that cannot be understated. Chelsea can’t rely on just one ‘keeper for an entire season, and now Antonio Conte will be confident in the options from which he can select.
It will come as no surprise, then, that the Blues are ready to hold on to him for another year.
It’s always difficult to find a good backup option, as the best shot-stoppers are always keen to play every single week. In Caballero, though, Chelsea have been able to find a player that is able to do a job when called upon, but more than happy to sit on the bench most weeks.
As such, it makes perfect sense that Chelsea aren’t willing to let him leave.
Caballero has made 10 appearances for Chelsea this season.
Landlord’s Verdict
This is great news for Chelsea.
They need stability between the sticks, and by holding on to Caballero, they’ll be getting exactly that.
Whilst Courtois’ future remains uncertain, Chelsea have done well to make an early decision here.
